Who Can Take Lessons With EqX?
Our lessons are available for individuals of nearly all ages, stages, abilities and disabilities. All classes are tailored around each student's individual capabilities and skill level. No prior horse experience is necessary, only a desire to learn and have fun!
What Types Of Lessons Are Offered?
We offer individual and group classes for children, adults, individuals with special needs and families. Our instructors teach a variety of classes that can accommodate the desires and needs of each individual:
For those who want to learn to ride , we offer English and Western disciplines.
For those who want to work with horses without riding them, we offer horsemanship groundwork, unmounted/in-hand lessons and harness driving.
For those who are really adventurous , we offer vaulting, which is a form of gymnastics and dance on horseback!
For those with special needs , we offer adaptive lessons in all disciplines with specially
trained and certified instructors.
Where Do You Offer Lessons?
We offer lessons at 3 different locations on Whidbey Island :
South Whidbey [ Langley ] : We have 2 outdoor, uncovered, unlighted arenas (one for riding; one for harness driving).
Central Whidbey [ Greenbank ] : We have 1 covered and lighted arena.
North Whidbey [ Oak Harbor ] : We have 1 enclosed and lighted arena.
What Types Of Lessons Do You Offer At Each Location?
We offer riding lessons at all 3 locations while harness driving lessons are only at the Langley location due to the much larger area required for driving classes. Vaulting lessons are currently being held at the Central and North Whidbey arenas.
When Do You Offer Lessons?
Lessons are offered in 8-week sessions in the Winter, Spring, Fall and with special sessions in the Summer. Of course, our all-weather horses, instructors and volunteers operate rain or shine as follows:
Langley : Monday, Wednesday and Fridays [ 2:00 PM to dark, weather permitting]
Greenbank : Thursdays [ 12:00 Noon to 6PM ]
Oak Harbor : Fridays [ 12 Noon to 6PM ]

Who Is Teaching These Lessons?
We have 4 wonderful instructors that are knowledgeable and well-educated in their horsemanship disciplines, with a combination of over 40 years of teaching experience. All our instructors are certified and insured. All of our instructors maintain their certifications and follow the safety guidelines of ALL of the organizations that have shaped their education.
Miriam Burk : Miriam has taught in numerous riding programs in both Virginia and Washington State for over 10 years. In addition to being a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) Registered Riding Instructor, Miriam also holds vaulting coach certification from AVA (American Vaulting Association) and CHA riding instructor certification (Certified Horsemanship Association).
Emily Brink, PT, MS: Emily is both a NARHA Registered Riding Instructor and a licensed Physical Therapist with a Level I certification in Hippotherapy from AHA (American Hippotherapy Association). Emily has taught riding for over 3 years.
Gretchen Van Male : Gretchen is most generous to volunteer her skills as a NARHA Registered Riding Instructor. She has taught riding, both English and Western, for several years at programs in Arizona and now with EqX.
How Much Do Lessons Cost And How Long Are Lesson Sessions? Sport Riding/In-hand [Private]: $30.00/1 hour lessons for 8 lessons = $240
Sport Riding/In-hand [Group of 4 Max]: $30.00/1.5 hour lessons for 8 lessons = $240
Adaptive Riding [Private]: $30.00/1 hour lessons for 8 lessons = $240
Adaptive Riding [Group of 4 Max]: $30.00/1.5 hour lessons for 8 lessons = $240
Vaulting [Group of 4 Max]: $30.00/1.5 hour lessons for 8 lessons = $240
Harness Driving [Private]: $45.00/2 hour lessons for 8 lessons = $360
Are There Any Other Fees Or Costs? Yes!
(1) There is a “once a year”, $30.00 registration fee which helps cover our administrative and insurance costs.
(2) If you are vaulting, you will need to join the AVA [American Vaulting Association]. Go to www.americanvaulting.org for more information.
(3) Additional costs may be required in order to attend competitions, pay for entry fees, performance costumes, vaulting shoes/riding boots, transportation, etc.
(4) Lastly, students are required to provide their own ESTM - SEI approved equestrian riding helmet for all lessons.
Speaking Of Membership, Does EQUESTRIAN CROSSINGS Offer Memberships? Yes! We are a member-operated, member-driven, and member-supported organization. We offer several types of memberships, as follows:
Individual [1 person, over 18]: $30/year Voting privileges and discounts
Family [With Student]: $45/year Voting privileges and discounts
-Time : $300 Voting privileges and discounts
Non-Voting [Under 18] : $0 No Voting privileges or discounts
You know what they say! With membership, come privileges. Membership gives you access to our website's “Member's Only” forum, discounts on classes, voting privileges and an invitation to our Annual Membership Meeting in November where you will have a voice in how EqX is run, which is important as our organization grows and evolves. As we grow, being a member will give you other privileges yet to be announced. We would encourage all riders and their families and friends to become supporting members of EqX . And remember, we're a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation, so all your donations and membership fees are tax-deductible .
